Blocks of all sizes can be split along their natural cleats. This is done using a variety of methods, depending on the size of the raw blocks and the desired finished product. In the case of large raw blocks, holes are drilled along the chosen cleat and driving key combinations consisting of two keys and one wedge are inserted. The wedges are carefully driven in using the blunt end of a heavy sledgehammer, so that the block gradually splits along the natural cleat. Smaller blocks can be cleaved either using a correspondingly smaller driving key combination or splitting wedge. Smaller and easily storable blocks are cleaved using special chisels or sledge hammers directly onto a split tile approx. 4-6 cm thick. The surfaces produced using this method are known as " rough cleaved or natural rough finish ".
